The Inner Game Of Tennis
These are personal notes (some copy/pasted), so please don't judge any grammar! If you see something interesting here, let's discuss it!
We are such good learners naturally – the baby dancing, the young kid learning second languages, the lack of external pressures and external thoughts distracting us. If we can find a way to lose inhibitions and ‘focus in the moment,’ optimal learning can happen
- No one judges a baby falling while he is trying to walk. Losing these external expectations rally matter
- FOCUS – a lot of people remove themselves from the present. They rely on past success/failure; they look to the future and pressure themselves. Anxiously arises in the state, which then makes you LOSE FLOW and things become unnatural.
- Deep breathing was brought up
- Often over analyzing hurts us – its brings on unnatural habits which “may make us try to hard”
- Peak performance – Potential minus interference. 99% of the time interference is within us
- Remove self-awareness in the moment – Players have posted their best performance when they just “don’t give a shit.” They go out and play with zero thoughts or attention to how they look or how it feels – rather just let nature work.
7. Think of Lebron in game 5 of Detroit versus trying to chase Jordan’s Legacy – When he thinks about what Jordon would do or hears the comparisons, he freezes.
8. CONSCIOUS TRYING OFTEN PRODUCES NEGATIVE RESULTS
9. This is the nothing to lose attitude
10. Remove the ‘chattering mind’ – “Raise your arm, extend at 45 degrees, throw the ball” … Just throw the ball, picture and feel how success should happen and you naturally should do better
11. Some coaches can actually interfere with the learning process. They can have too many thoughts/tips, it overwhelms the mentee and they “increase chatter” rather than “increase flow”
12. Compare this to the baby rhino drowning and the mom watching. The mom knows that natural born instincts will push the baby rhino to survive and that nature is more powerful.
13. In this vein, the best coaches serve as guide-rails rather than tactical insight (sometimes)
14. Try to find similar efforts across other areas:
15. A punt returner counts to 10 after the ball is kicked – this removes any thoughts surrounding fumbling
16. Compound effect of results – If we stay in the moment, we SHOULD be able to do a better job at the task at hand. This should allow us to be happier/less anxious which in return produces better results
17. Staying in the moment may mean being organized professionally. If you come into the day with a defined plan, that reduces your need to let your mind wander and you can focus on the task at hand
18. This should increase efficiency over the day
19. Math in my head is lose 15 minutes to plan and organize, get back 30 minutes from increased output.
